Aksarben by Rob Walters
Aksarben was coined by The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, a civic and philanthropic organization formed "To leverage collective business leadership to build a more prosperous heartland". Ak-Sar-Ben is Nebraska spelled backwards meant to highlight “turning Nebraska around”. Building an arena and racetrack to support their efforts Aksarben Village, in the center of Omaha, was a glorious place mixed with the working class and aristocrats of the Omaha community and became the home for many events celebrating the prosperity and pride Omaha and the Midwest enjoyed. Today much of the landscape and most of the landmarks of that era are gone, replaced or forgotten. Aksarben now seems to conjure a landscape mixed with memory and melancholy. A landscape suspended in potential of what may become and the remnants and facts of what was.
