Issue 140

This particular body of work, currently untitled, is located within the interactions between futurism and the vernacular. While not directly addressing date as a contextual element, the works identify with the transitional frame of time where the polaroid as an image object is exiting the canon of familial memory while artificial intelligence is being rapidly introduced into our daily lives in a groundbreaking but expectedly juvenile state of development.

The process of creation involves a set of AI Programs that translate text to generative images based on vast search-based picture archives, which are then transferred through a timed exposure onto Polaroid film. The source texts come from both art historical and personal narrative origins, and the display and organization of the works reflect the syntax of the prose being translated into image. While sometimes interacting with a singular “photographic” image as a visual point of departure, each repeated generation of an image through the program acts as both the artistic gesture and the visual identity of the works, minutely changed letter by letter to reflect a color and compositional palette that reinforces the quote that the image was initially generated from.

Devin Blaskovich lives and works in Southern California and New York City.
