Derrell Lopez

Issue 162

These selected works are self-portraits taken with an instant camera, they depict feelings of the hate, love, and loss I’ve experienced with myself. Each Polaroid work presents a unique visual style, distorted and manipulated Polaroids show stronger feelings of self-hate, sharper and clearer Polaroids show the self-love, and a more abstracted approach with long exposure to show the self-loss. Through these multiple Polaroid techniques, I am exploring myself and my body which allows me to dive deeper into who I am and to redefine myself with the world and people around me to explore what I lost, what I found, and what I continue to experience today.

Derrell Lopez (Navajo) (he/him) is currently based in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
