Far Chang by Taylor Glenn

Issue 16

In November of 2009 I was invited by Mandarin Green Plastics Co. to photograph in their artificial flower factory in Huidong, China. This family-owned company, like many Chinese businesses, exports their products to Western markets.

So many of the goods we purchase today are manufactured in China but we rarely give thought to how these products are made and the individuals who are responsible. The story of this factory and its people is very positive which is a departure from the largely negative associations the West implies upon Chinese producers. The facility is clean and the workers are treated well. The Miao family, who operates this business do so with integrity and compassion. This is an important story that is not being told in mainstream media. These images should encourage a more well rounded dialogue about our relationship with China and its people who manufacture many of the goods we buy.
