Margins by Sara Ferguson
My photographic pursuits relate to history, memory, nostalgia and the ways that individuals and societies evolve within a landscape. I am drawn to subjects that display changes visually, the way a space has been used over time and the artifacts of that use. The images that make up Margins are part of an ongoing project to document the marginal communities that exist around the perimeter of the San Francisco Bay and along the waterways of the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta. Some of the places featured are growing, in turn expanding the landscape of the metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. Others are shrinking, swallowed up by this growth. Some seem preserved, isolated by physical boundaries that shifted around them.
Sara Ferguson lives and works in Oakland, CA.
