RIVER by Christopher Bush
I made these images in the early spring of 2015 in Kyoto, surrounding areas, and out of various train windows. The tree limbs were beautifully bare, as the sakura and associated tourist frenzy were still a few weeks out. Within this flowerless landscape I found a vocabulary to describe an emotional state and renew my understanding of why I photograph. This is not a documentary about Japan.
I started by shooting whatever I saw that excited me, which was everything at that point. Walking up and down the Kamogawa at 6 a.m. in a jet-lagged fog, every bird, every wave, every naked tree was constantly undergoing subtle changes. Photography is entirely about minutiae. My favorite Greek-Japanese crossover philosophy: one cannot step into the same river twice. I would add, one cannot take the same photograph twice.
