Driving into St. Louis on I-55, there is a moment when all of a sudden, the Gateway Arch reveals itself in all of its elegant glory. Every single time, I am stunned by this majestic and commanding structure. But how to capture it? How to take this seminal structure and harness its power and magnitude in a still image? I use wet plate collodion to contrast this historic process with the modernist splendor of the Arch. The tintype mirrors its steel construction and ties past to present. The focus on small segments and details takes the enormity of the structure and digests it into intimate, precious objects.
