Mississippi by Missy Prince

The Mississippi landscape exudes a primordial mystique. The past has lingered longer there than it has in most places, but not in a nostalgic way. Historic markers are pale references to what you can already feel without them. It's in the fecund soil, the damp still air, the hum of insects that outnumber people, the patient stare of the reptile. It's in the places where nature runs wild and unchecked, where so-called civilization has been stalled by natural and man made calamities. A sense of the eternal lies within the stark flat land that runs from The Delta down through the Piney Woods and into the Gulf Coastal Plain.

I have tried to distill a sense of the land into these images of my home state. The qualities of place I absorbed as a child staring out of a car window are still present when I pass through as a visitor, but they reveal themselves differently. The photographs are marks of an ongoing exchange between mind and place.
