Luminance by Qian Ma

Issue 66

I read a book a little while ago. Among the many things it talks about, is the significance and beauty of what cannot be seen. This really intrigued me, as it made me think about the silence in music, the empty space captured inside of a building, and what a story doesn’t reveal. And then I thought about the moment when you close your eyes. In our world of sensory overload, the act of not seeing really doesn’t get practiced enough, so I set out to do something about it. Sometimes it’s what’s not shown that completes the picture.

The book I read was In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki. Luminance is the human perception of brightness.
