A Balancing Act by Emily Margarit Mason
Issue 163
Throughout my practice, I create momentary sculptural sets for the camera using fragmented photographic prints and found materials. My work physically reimagines the perceived natural world from something seen to something felt. Exploring how the multifaceted nature of experience might emotionally manifest. The process is physical both in and out of the studio, a performance of sorts. Collecting images and objects, I then reassemble them into new compositions in the studio.
In my series, A Balancing Act, I explore moments of visual instability, utilizing form, repetition, and color to build upon the existing captured images. The fragmented images mimic a moment you can almost remember. Pieces of the memory come in and out of focus, rendering the details close to the viewer but far, familiar but distant. Components are altered, removed, and repositioned. In turn, my series deepens the perception of recollection, time, and image-making.
Emily Margarit Mason (she/her) lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
